The Quest

Backward Aging 3.8 – Mind Building

Never use aging as an excuse.
Make backward aging a lifelong challenge.
Keep growing, learning, living your passions.
Create a long, healthy, happy, meaningful life.

Mind building is the art of strengthening your mind and harnessing it so every action you take is purposeful, and focused on improving your well-being. Mind building may seem impossible to most people. After many years, I found that I could change my mind’s state and intent at will. How? By accepting that I, and I alone, control my choices. It’s just a matter of choice. Even when we avoid making a choice, we are making one, not to act on something!

Whenever bad things happen, I take a deep breath, smile and change my perspective to find something positive in the situation. The way I look at what happens in my life has a considerable impact on my health—even my immune system.

My mood can determine how my cells function and even feel. Yes, I believe cells have feelings and respond to our feelings, both good and bad. When cells receive positive feelings, they feel good too, filling themselves with oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and vitamins—whatever they need to grow and live. When cells are exposed to bad or negative feelings, they contract, go into the fight or flight survival mode, stop enjoying life, and some may even die. Using tools like MRIs, PET scans, EKGs, and EEGs, researchers have documented how cells throughout the body respond to emotions.

For example, if I think I am a victim of the outside world, that negativity filters down to my cells’ level. My cells may feel victimized. If I choose to look at the situation with humor and laugh at this situation, my cells and muscles grow resilient, as I prepare myself for the next event or adventure.

It’s all just a matter of choice, and you always have a choice. Regardless of the size of the issue, whether it’s small and personal, a family concern, professional problem, or about life and death—you always have a choice. It’s wise to train yourself by making deliberate, fully conscious choices for small things. For example, noting that you are choosing to brush your teeth before going to bed, or choosing a blue shirt, not brown. By beginning with small decisions, larger ones will be easier. As with any training, the more you practice the better you become at it.

So why should I give the external world or other people the power to determine the way I feel? It’s my privilege to feel how I want to. Owning my feelings is one of the real powers I have, and the essence of my life. I just have to be conscious of the choices I have right here, right now.

Most people believe they are victims of their past, and many fear for their own future. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Why live in the past or the not yet here, unknown future? Life is happening now, and that’s precisely the time to make the right decisions to create a better future.

I love this quote of Henry Ford: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”
In my next letter, I’ll talk about other lifestyle changes to become a super ager.

Stay tuned,

Boris Clair

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how
to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was
almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great
job. I really loved what you had to say, and more
than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
