The Quest

Backward Aging 3.5 – Changing Habits

Success is getting what you want, and happiness is loving what you have. Each decision you make either accelerates or reverses aging. If your goal is to age slowly, gracefully, and even backward, you need to make a conscious choice that is positive and healthful for you.

You can continue with poor habits that most probably accelerate your aging, or change your lifestyle to start reversing the aging process. Moving out of your comfort zone, value even the smallest success, and loving what you’ve done so far, move you in the direction of reversed aging.

That’s why your sense of self-love and your self-image are so important! If both are strong, you will be less likely to take on destructive habits like using tobacco or drugs, eating the wrong food, avoiding exercise, not learning, and adapting to a fast-changing world, all of which may limit you realizing your full life potential. If you’re confident, you’ll consider these habits as being unworthy of you.

Unless you have been living in a cave outside of the modern world, you know their abominable long-term consequences. If with all of your being you reject these unhealthy ways of living, you may never start using them, or go back to depending on them.

When I was younger, I fell into the tobacco trap and did drink alcohol. But very soon, I realized what these chemicals were doing to my body, and I stopped using them. I decided my body deserved better, healthier ways to fight stress, and smarter ways to be accepted by my peers. I was able to stop using any mood-altering drugs.

I discovered at the age of fifty that the easiest way to fight stress is simply by running or exercising. Physical activities make the body produce free natural morphine. For me, it helped calm my pain and increased my creativity. It also brings much-needed oxygen and beneficial enzymes and nutrients to the cells. These natural chemicals, made while exercising, even clean the body of toxins.

I learned that exercising also makes both sides of my brains work in sync. This helps me find solutions to hard technical problems I may have been working on all day. Late afternoon, I start running, and suddenly after twenty minutes I often have a spark of light. There it is—the wanted solution!

Considering I only have this body, at least for this life, I find it more interesting and fun to optimize the way it works, rather than fall into my tendency toward instant gratification.

How can one increase self-esteem and self-love? One of the most efficient ways I found is to challenge myself. Any kind of challenge, ranging from small such as putting some order in my office, to swimming two miles in the cold water of the Riviera winter sea. The idea is that pushing your limits makes you feel great and builds your self-confidence for the next venture. This process also gives you a sense of satisfaction that you’ve completed something, and can certainly succeed at the next task.

As we age, we tend to focus on what stops working. It’s easy to use the “I’m too old to do this!” excuse. This limiting belief often leads to feeling unhappy and depressed. To age backward we need to focus on the opposite: Where am I still growing? What do I do better now than in the past? This is why it is so important to continue learning new things, discovering new domains, and acquiring new skills. The best way to do it is by challenging yourself.

Basically, if you believe you can’t do something, it’s time to consider action. The more you accomplish, the better you get at challenging yourself. It makes your life a fascinating experience. Go for it!

In my next letter, I’ll talk about other lifestyle changes and how to get out of your limiting comfort zone.

Stay tuned,

Boris Clair

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how
to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was
almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great
job. I really loved what you had to say, and more
than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
