Backward Aging 3.6 – Resolutions

When we choose New Year’s resolutions for self-improvement, especially with the goal of backward aging, it’s important to ensure that our bodies support the change. Science shows that the flow of cortisol, the stress hormone, accelerates aging. Likewise, it is well documented that healthy levels of dopamine, endorphin, serotonin (all the well-being hormones), and cytosine (the love hormone), slow down aging. So, how do you control the healthy flow of your hormones?

One of the answers is found in your way of thinking, and more specifically the way you think about yourself. In other words, be sure that you have a strong self-esteem. One of the best ways I found to boost my self-esteem is following the teachings of Christian D. Larson written in 1912:

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but great deeds.

To live in faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you“.

by Christian D. Larson, “Your Forces and How to Use Them,” 1912.

Do your New Year’s resolutions seem impossible, or too overwhelming to even begin? Here are suggestions for starting and creating the changes you want in your life.

Begin one step at a time! Like physical exercise and muscle building, you don’t start by running a marathon. You start slowly, you keep motivating yourself by acknowledging each little progress you make, and by using repetition, practicing, again and again. Smile as you push yourself, and enjoy each little progress!

You have the power to change the way you look at the world. That’s what I call mind-building, the equivalent of body-building. It feels great! It’s rediscovering the true you. Getting rid of all the negative programming you’ve been subject to since your childhood is such a release. Like a breeze of fresh air. Go for it!

The best way I know to rejuvenate and wipe out years of negative thinking and misery, is by re-creating the proper attitude. Giving voice to “the wisdom of the ages” as Christian Larson says so well in some of the many inspiring books he wrote. You can have free access to some of his books in pdf format by clicking above link.

As we age, we tend to focus on what stops working in our life, erecting physical and mental limitations: I can’t run as fast, or as far as I did before; I forgot to switch off the light, or I can’t remember this person’s name. The list of negative thinking about aging can go on and on, without end.

Working on Larson’s promise to yourself, and rewarding any small victory over your fear-induced negative thinking habits is the best way I know to keep growing. Growing up is recovering the freshness of our youth. Youth being that time when discovering new things and adventures was at the core of our enthusiasm and joy for living, and are still the best ways to embrace agelessness.

In my next letter, I’ll talk about other lifestyle changes and how to move out of your limiting comfort zone.

Stay tuned,

Boris Clair

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how
to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was
almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great
job. I really loved what you had to say, and more
than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
